Clinical depression is a common disorder in many countries. Also called major depressive disorder or unipolar depression, the patient suffering from depression experiences a loss of interest in daily activities and feels sad. The patient is indifferent to activities which he or she enjoys normally.

Studies have shown that women are almost twice as likely as men to suffer from depression. This may be due to hormonal changes in women as the number of men and women suffering from depression is almost the same for patients more than 60 years old. The depression may be caused by physical ailments or due to psychological reasons. If the depression is due to a disease , doctors will first treat it.

The duration and frequency of depression varies from person to person. For some people, it may occur once in a lifetime , for others it may occur periodically. The duration may vary from a few hours to three weeks. In some persons, it is a life long disorder and may result in suicide.
